Cyanobacteria mat with alternating layers of volcanic ash, 9 1/2" x 5" x 5/8" thick. This pattern most likely stems from a type of moneran mat growing in shallow water on top of a layer of volcanic ash. This process repeats itself over and over again, creating the striping effect. Very interesting specimen!
